Spring returns to the trees of Moling, while people grow old in the city of Jiankang. How many things have I pondered beneath the moon and in the breeze; now, in old age, I’ve achieved nothing. Who pities the withered and further withered? Testing lights is pointless; there’s no mood to walk in the snow. What a pointless task of testing lights; I have no mood to walk in the snow either!

Testing the lights: It is an old custom to light lamps on the night of the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, in order to pray for a bountiful harvest. Lighting the lamps in advance, before the Lantern Festival, is called testing the lights.
