Many excavator operators are concerned about the efficiency of their excavators. Many people think that low efficiency is due to the brand or performance of the excavator, but I don’t agree with this. While performance does affect efficiency, for skilled operators, it doesn’t have much impact on it. I use a Doosan, while one of my friends uses a Caterpillar; both machines have roughly the same weight. However, the efficiency of my Doosan is no less than that of the Caterpillar’s. Although the Doosan isn’t a top-tier excavator, it performs well in all other aspects and is particularly suitable for people like us who are not professionals in this field. Given such a significant difference, how is it possible for my efficiency to be comparable to that of the Caterpillar’s? Below, I’ll explain to you how I manage to do that. The number of dump trucks used in conjunction with excavators, as well as their loading capacity, must meet the production requirements of the excavators; furthermore, the capacity of these dump trucks should be an integer multiple of the capacity of the excavator’s bucket. At the same time, the double-loading method should be used as much as possible: the excavator fills one truck first and then immediately another one. Since the two dump trucks are parked on an arc within reach of the excavator’s bucket, the bucket can fill one truck when rotating forward and fill the other when rotating backward, thereby improving the loading efficiency. Second, in the construction planning, the driving routes for dump trucks should be planned in advance, and unnecessary uphill paths should be removed. For each digging path of the excavator, there must be a return path for empty vehicles, to prevent interference between the dump trucks when they enter and exit. Each running track should be in good condition to facilitate the operation of dump trucks. Third, the technical condition of the excavator has a significant impact on its productivity, especially the power output of the engine. Furthermore, when the bucket teeth are worn, the cutting resistance of the bucket increases by 60%-90%; therefore, dull bucket teeth should be replaced. Fourth, excavator operators should possess skilled operating techniques and use combined operations as much as possible to reduce the operation cycle time of the excavator. This way, work efficiency can be greatly improved. I’m not sure if my methods will be helpful to everyone; perhaps many people who work with excavators already know these techniques, but they just can’t always pay attention to them.
