Should the steam heater and its associated pipes be insulated first, or should pressure testing for leaks be done first? If insulation is applied first, leak testing won’t reveal where the leaks are; and even if they can be identified, the insulation layer will have to be removed, which is quite troublesome ; If leak testing is done first, without insulation the steam temperature will be high, and it’s likely that personnel won’t be able to approach the valves to operate them.
First, maintain heat to leave space for the weld seam and flange.
For steam pipes and equipment, a hydrostatic test is carried out first using water as the testing medium; at this stage, it’s not necessary to insulate them, but if insulation is used, space should be left around the welds and flanges. After the water pressure meets the requirements, purging is carried out using steam; insulation is necessary at this time.
Use water for pressure testing, air for sealing; after that, maintain heat and introduce steam
Piping pressure testing is carried out using water pressure; insulation is not required at this stage. After the testing is complete, insulation is applied and steam is used to warm the pipes in order to increase the pressure
