Bending radius of elbow

How should the bending radius of a bent pipe be determined? Is it a multiple of the nominal diameter? Should it be a multiple of the outer diameter of the pipe? I’ve seen books on pipeline construction in China; the formulas used there generally refer to multiples of the outer diameter, but the tables provided show multiples of the nominal diameter, which is confusing. Also, how long should the straight section of the elbow be? Are there any empirical data? Thanks! I would appreciate some guidance from experts, thank you!
