What’s the use of this cotton anyway? ? ? ?

Reduce vibration, reduce friction, and prevent sparks from being generated by vibration.
Reduce friction between pipes and clamps to prevent sparks from vibration.
To prevent pipeline vibration, there is support at the bottom, but some shaking may still occur; this is likely due to friction with the clamping supports, so a soft material is placed in between as a protective measure. But it is recommended to use plastic padding, as cotton protection may contain moisture and cause rust.
I’ve never seen one with cotton-like filler; usually, rubber, PVC, and the like are used.
This pipe clamp is supposed to serve as a shock absorber; at the same time, the asbestos coating prevents the clamp from causing scratches on the pipe’s surface.
Damn, the method used here is too crude. Usually, PTFE or rubber sheets are used as linings for pipe supports, which gives a better appearance. Nowadays, asbestos is not allowed to be used due to environmental and occupational health reasons. The approach shown in the picture is more like something done by guerrillas, rather than a proper method
