May I ask, must the steel used for pressure vessels be carbon steel?

In our country, there are currently five strength grades of steel that fall under the category of steels specifically designed for pressure vessels: 20R, 16MnR, 15MnVR, 15MnVNR, and 18MnMoNbR. I’m completely clueless when it comes to steel designations; I hope someone experienced can provide some guidance. Thank you!
The steel grades you mentioned, 20R and 16MnR, are old names; the names have changed now. Please check Table 2 in GB/T150.2-2011, which lists various grades of carbon and low-alloy steel plates
Not at all; there are plenty of materials that can be used
Stainless steel, aluminum, copper, titanium, and so on – even if you want to use new materials, that’s fine as well; you just need to conduct tests and then have relevant institutions carry out technical evaluations.

The definition of pressure vessels also does not specify that carbon steel must be used.
