Definition of pressure pipelines: Pressure pipelines refer to tubular devices that use a certain pressure to transport gases or liquids. They are defined as pipelines with a maximum operating pressure of 0.1 MPa (gauge pressure) or more, whose medium is gas, liquefied gas, steam, or liquids that are flammable, explosive, toxic, corrosive, and have a maximum operating temperature equal to or higher than their standard boiling point; such pipelines also have a nominal diameter of 50 mm or more. Except for pipes with a nominal diameter of less than 150 mm and a maximum operating pressure of less than 1.6 MPa (gauge pressure), as well as the pipes that form part of the equipment used for transporting non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-corrosive gases. So: 1. How should the maximum operating pressure be understood? Is it the operating pressure under the most severe conditions or the design pressure? For pipes that are connected to the atmosphere or used for direct drainage, since they are connected to the atmosphere, the operating pressure is usually at atmospheric pressure; the design pressure is then typically determined by adding 0.18 to this value. So, if it’s considered a design pressure, does that mean even vent pipes fall under the category of pressure pipes? Or isn’t the design pressure of the vent pipe increased by 0.18? 2. Do pipes with a diameter of 150 mm or more not need to meet the 1.6 MPa(g) requirement? Is it considered a pressure pipeline as long as it’s above 0.1?
The maximum operating pressure is the design pressure
The maximum operating pressure is also a type of operating pressure; it represents the highest value reached at the top of the container during operation. This should be distinguished from the maximum allowable operating pressure; it is not the design pressure, which must be at least equal to the operating pressure. If the working pressure is < 0.1 Mpa, it is not subject to the supervision of pipeline capacity regulations.
Theoretically, that is the case, but in practical design work, we usually use design pressure as the criterion for determining pressure pipelines.
