However, for seamless steel pipes used for transporting fluids as specified in GB8163, the dimensional specifications follow GBT17395; and according to GBT17395, Series 1 is considered the general standard, yet it’s not the series I usually use. How should this be understood? Thank you all for your responses, but I still haven’t received the answer I’m looking for: 1. According to the GB8163 standard for seamless steel pipes used for transporting fluids, the dimensional specifications are based on GBT17395; 2: GBT17395 states that Series 1 should be given priority, but is Series 1 the one we commonly use? Your question is not a standard one. GBT17395 specifies standards for pipe dimensions, weight, and dimensional tolerances; it has nothing to do with the pipe series you mentioned – this standard applies to all such series. The outer diameter of the pipes you use regularly should be that of metric pipes (small diameter); your factory is likely an old factory. Now, imperial pipes (large diameter) are widely used; if you need fittings, you have to find the corresponding fittings for that series (small diameter). Also, these several of your criteria are not on the same level and cannot be compared; the issues described in the criteria are not the same. Something like 8163 should be compared with 9948 to get a proper comparison; it’s not appropriate to compare 8163 with 17395

Let me briefly share my personal thoughts. The 17395 standard currently uses version 08, while 8163 uses version 18; the former corresponds to ISO on a consistent but not equivalent basis. Speaking of the issues related to Series 1 and Series 2, these two sets of standards are not consistent with each other; there is no requirement that if one chooses Series 1, then one cannot choose Series 2. For the practical selection series, in addition to meeting standard requirements, the key factors are availability in the market as well as high quality at favorable prices. So as long as one meets the standards, it doesn’t matter which one is chosen; there’s no need to overthink it. Moreover, it is clearly stated in 8163 that, as required by the buyer and through consultation between the supplier and the buyer, steel pipes with other outer diameters and wall thicknesses can be supplied. There is also 17395; in addition to the applicable carbon steel, stainless steel is also included, and the specifications for stainless steel need to be taken into account, so it’s sufficient to fall within this broader standard range.
Series 1 of GBT17395 is universal, and it is identical to SH405 and HG20553 Series Ia.
17395 is a dimension standard; it’s too old and hardly used anymore. Most dimension standards use HG20553. 8163 is a delivery standard for seamless steel pipes, and it doesn’t belong to the same category
Thank you, but it’s not clear during the design phase which outer diameter option is more cost-effective. An important purpose of posting this thread is to find out which series is currently in use, so that various departments can be asked to select products from that series before starting the design process.
Thank you, but I still have a question. The standard for the pipe material listed in the bill of materials is still 8163; by using that standard to determine the dimensions, I got the value 17395. Isn’t the pipe material specification on your end listed as 8163?
The material list specifies GB8163, but the pipe dimensions in the material list are based on HG20553; Steel pipe factories manufacture steel pipes in accordance with GB17395 dimensions, and these standards are not contradictory to each other.
