I would like to ask: for an existing flat-bottomed storage tank with a diameter of 2.8 meters, should the diameter of the tank’s foundation be 2.8 meters as well, or should it be larger than that?
It has to be larger than 2.8m; it’s not possible to have the wall attached right to the edge of the foundation
If the diameter of the storage tank is 2.8 m, the diameter of the foundation can be chosen to be the same as that of the tank or slightly larger. Generally, to ensure that the foundation can support the weight of the tank and remain stable, it is recommended to design the diameter of the foundation to be around 1.2 to 1.5 times the diameter of the tank. Therefore, in this case, the diameter of the foundation should be between 3.36 m and 4.2 m. The specific dimensions need to be calculated and analyzed based on the design requirements of the storage tank and the soil conditions. .
It is larger than 2.8m; generally, the radius of the foundation for conventional storage tanks is 200 mm larger than the radius of the tank itself, with other details determined based on actual conditions
Different foundation types should be selected based on the type of storage tank; it is not possible to determine the foundation type simply based on the diameter, and this should be decided by the structural design team.
If it has legs, it can be placed even if its size is slightly smaller than the diameter of the tank; but if it relies on supports, it definitely won’t be sufficient. Storage tanks require foundation bolts, which need to be embedded in advance. Many people embed a steel plate for this purpose; however, after installation, that plate has to be removed and replaced.
Generally, having several units of 100-200 on one side is sufficient; for standardization, one can consult a design institute or use existing references
