Why can’t fillet joints be inspected using ultrasound or radiography?
The structural characteristics of fillet joints may affect the effectiveness of ultrasonic or radiographic testing. For ultrasonic testing, the irregular shape and large angles of fillet joints can lead to complex behavior in the propagation, reflection, and scattering of ultrasonic waves, making it difficult to obtain accurate detection signals. As for ray detection, such as X-rays or gamma rays, the geometry of the fillet joint can also lead to the absorption and scattering of these rays, affecting the quality of the imaging and making it difficult to accurately detect defects. Therefore, for fillet joints, other non-destructive testing methods are usually required, or a combination of multiple methods is employed to ensure the reliability of the testing. .

Of course, for this type of joint and weld, when performing RT/UT tests, the placement of the probes or sensors is also affected by the structure. When many standards are formulated, terms such as XX joint and XX weld are used in a confused manner. There is no good standardization in welding terminology. As shown in Figure 27, RT is very convenient. The latter ones are not easy to handle, and of course, the importance of joint design is also reduced.
