The CNPC Pipeline CPP601 pipelaying ship belongs to the Pipelaying Ship Division of China National Petroleum Pipeline Bureau’s Sixth Engineering Company. It is the first pipelaying ship built by this company for its marine operations, and it was put into service in October 2013. This vessel combines three functions: submarine pipeline laying, large-scale floating crane operations, and hotel-style apartments. It is registered in Hong Kong, China, with the call sign VRMF4, and has received certifications from classification societies such as ABS*A1EBarge and UWILD. The CPP601 pipe-laying ship, as a flagship vessel of Dagang Oil Construction, has not only demonstrated outstanding operational capabilities in marine operations but has also earned widespread acclaim for its impressive performance. However, little is known about the living conditions of the crew on this ship, hailed as the \"king of the seas\". Currently, the pipelaying vessel CPP601 is at work in the construction area of the Gulf of Guinea, about 15 kilometers off the coast of Benin. It is carrying out the construction work related to the single-point mooring part of the offshore terminal for the Phase 2 Niger integration project. When the workers prepare to board the ship, they first need to take a shuttle boat to the side of the ship, and then be “lifted” onto the deck using the ship’s powerful 30-ton crane. It takes nearly two hours to travel by ferry from the Benin coast to the CPP601 pipe-laying ship. The uneven movement of the waves combined with the smell of diesel from the engine created an unpleasant atmosphere. Especially when setting out in heavy fog or at night, extra caution is required, and frequent communication with the helmsman is necessary to ensure safe navigation.
