German operator successfully converted 400 kilometers of existing natural gas pipelines into pure hydrogen pipelines

Recently, Germany’s natural gas transmission operator GASCADE Gastransport GmbH (referred to as GASCADE) announced that the core section of its “Flow – making hydrogen happen” hydrogen pipeline project has been put into operation. This project successfully transformed 400 kilometers of existing natural gas pipelines into hydrogen transport pipelines, not only establishing Germany’s first hydrogen transportation \"north-south axis\" but also demonstrating through large-scale implementation the feasibility of converting existing fossil fuel infrastructure into clean energy infrastructure. It serves as a key model for the technological upgrading and industrial adoption of pipeline conversion from oil to hydrogen worldwide. As one of the key carriers for zero-carbon energy, the construction of infrastructure for the long-distance transportation of hydrogen has always been a major challenge in this industry. Traditional construction of new hydrogen pipelines faces challenges such as long timelines and high costs, while modifying existing natural gas pipelines requires overcoming various technical barriers posed by the unique physical and chemical properties of hydrogen. The key breakthrough of GASCADE’s renovation project lies in precisely overcoming this series of industry challenges.
