In the brine and concentrated brine storage tank V-409, the suspended solids level was 1.8 mg/l (the specified limit is 1 mg/l); can this indicate that the levels of calcium and magnesium ions are above the allowed limits? It should be noted that there were issues with the control of the normal saline, but the V-409 samples remained qualified throughout. Does this indicate that there are problems with the analysis results? Or put it this way, do analysts engage in fraud?

We diluted it 50 times; now the sampling tool provides more accurate measurements, so the deviation in the results should not be significant. Refined brine has a very high salt concentration, essentially approaching saturation. Although the solubility of sodium chloride is not greatly affected by temperature, it is possible for a small amount of salt crystals to precipitate when there are temperature fluctuations, especially at low temperatures. I have seen this situation before at the chlor-alkali plant of Qilu Petrochemical. Therefore, I believe that a high level of suspended solids in refined saltwater does not necessarily mean that the calcium and magnesium contents are above the limit. It is objective to make a judgment based on the analysis results; in addition, check the temperature fluctuations as well. Analyzing calcium and magnesium in high-concentration saline is difficult using ICP directly; it might be better to first evaporate and concentrate the saline to remove most of the salts, and then conduct the calcium and magnesium analysis (by appropriately diluting the mother solution without affecting the analysis results).
