On February 26, Shandong Haihua announced its intention to invest 4.837 billion yuan in a project aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of its soda ash production facilities through comprehensive utilization of resources and energy; the construction period for this project is 24 months. The announcement states that Shandong Haihua’s existing 1.2 million tons per year soda ash production line, which uses the ammonia-alkali process, has been in operation for over 30 years; its equipment is outdated, it consumes a lot of energy, and it generates high levels of emissions. As such, it no longer meets the requirements of modern industrial development, making process reform and upgrading necessary. The planned capacity for this ammonia-soda process conversion to the combined soda process is 1 million tons per year, replacing the existing 1.2 million tons per year production capacity of the Solvay (ammonia-soda process) soda ash plant. The capacity replacement ratio is 1.2:1, representing a reduction in production capacity, which is in line with **relevant industry policies. According to the announcement, the project will build a new synthetic ammonia plant with an annual capacity of 400,000 tons, as well as a new caustic soda production plant with an annual capacity of 1 million tons (producing 400,000 tons of light caustic soda and 600,000 tons of heavy caustic soda, with 1.03 million tons of ammonium chloride generated as a by-product). At the same time, the existing calcination, compression, packaging, storage, and transportation facilities, as well as some utility systems from the old ammonia-alkali production line, can be utilized. Shandong Haihua stated that the project aims at achieving a green and low-carbon transformation of energy. It plans to establish a green and low-carbon technology framework through two approaches: replacing traditional energy sources with green energy and reducing costs through direct supply, thereby enabling the company to make early preparations for reaching carbon peak and carbon neutrality and facilitating its own green and low-carbon transformation.
