The explosive ranges of mixtures of hydrogen with air, oxygen, and chlorine are as follows: when the hydrogen content is between 4.1–74.2% (vol), 4.5–95% (vol), or 3.5–97% (vol). In mixtures containing chlorine, the hydrogen content must be kept within 3–7% (vol). Ignition of these mixtures results in explosions. Therefore, for safety reasons, after shutting down the furnace, it is necessary to purge it with nitrogen. The hydrogen content inside the furnace must be strictly controlled; only when it meets the specified limits can the furnace be restarted. There have also been incidents where the furnace failed to start or shut down properly; without carrying out nitrogen purging or re-analyzing the hydrogen content inside the furnace, explosions occurred, resulting in damage to the graphite in the synthesis furnace.
