A few days ago, our facility carried out maintenance work on the sulfur-based acid production system; a butterfly valve was installed at the outlet of the SO2 cooler, with the aim of isolating the SO2 system from the main system. When installing the valve, the workshop supervisor requested that the installation direction of the butterfly valve be opposite to the actual flow direction of the SO2 gas, stating that this was to prevent acidic sludge from affecting the valve’s sealing performance. Discussion: 1: Is this approach effective? 2: Will installing the valve in the opposite direction of the airflow cause prolonged erosion of its sealing surface, thereby affecting the seal?
