Beijing, July 11 (Reporter Liu Wenwen) – The reporter learned on the 11th from China Railway Construction Kunlun Investment Group Co., Ltd. that the largest bromine production project in China, funded by this company – the project aimed at achieving an annual bromine output of 30,000 tons through the green and efficient use of seawater for cooling in the Caofeidian Steel and Power Park – was officially launched in Tangshan, Hebei. As a basic chemical raw material, bromine is widely used in various fields such as flame retardants, pharmaceutical intermediates, and agricultural chemicals. It plays an irreplaceable role in the development of emerging sectors like electronics, new energy, and aerospace, as well as in the construction of modern industrial systems. Currently, China needs to import large amounts of bromine each year to meet the demands of its industrial development. Especially in recent years, with the rapid development of emerging fields such as new energy vehicles and lithium batteries, the supply and demand for bromine have become tighter, leading to an increasing reliance on imports. Green and efficient extraction of bromine resources from seawater has become a strategically important option. The Caofeidian seawater bromine extraction project launched this time is China Railway Construction’s first strategic emerging industry project in the marine economy sector. The project is located in the Caofeidian Iron and Steel Power Park in Tangshan City, Hebei Province, covering an area of approximately 263.8 mu. It utilizes the country’s first blowout tower with a diameter of 16 meters, and its designed production capacity is 30,000 tons per year. Construction is expected to be completed and the facility put into operation by 2026. Once operational, it will account for 30% of the country’s bromine production. Once the seawater bromine extraction technology used in this project is fully implemented, it will effectively change China’s current industry practice of relying mainly on underground brine for extraction. This will significantly increase bromine production capacity, thereby providing a secure foundation for the strategic reserve of bromine as a resource and for industrial control.
