What materials are used for the insulation of the SO2 converter and the gas heat exchanger in the conversion process? Thank you
The better options are rock wool boards and silicates
Be cautious with silicate boards; it is best to replace them all with aluminum silicate boards, which have better water-resistant properties.
There are aluminum silicate panels, rock wool panels, as well as those covered with aluminum or iron sheets. However, based on practical experience, for insulating the area where sulfuric acid is processed, the most important element is a waterproof layer; aluminum or iron sheets are not suitable for this purpose. In my opinion, using glass fiber cloth to create fiberglass material is the best option – although it requires a higher initial investment, it facilitates both waterproofing and future maintenance.
It has been recently discovered that in China, almost none of the insulation installations on the converters in sulfuric acid production plants are done correctly; without exception, such installations cause thermal stress in various parts of the equipment’s casing.
