As of August 20, the NWS wet-process vanadium acid catalyst developed independently by the R&D institute of Nanhua Company has been operating stably for 78 days in succession at Guangdong Hongrui’s 300,000-ton-per-year wet-process acid production and resource utilization project. Data shows that it broke the technical monopoly of imported catalysts in ultra-large-scale facilities, laying the foundation for the subsequent promotion of domestic alternatives. On May 28, the 300,000-ton/year wet-process acid production and resource comprehensive utilization project of Guangdong Hongrui was successfully commissioned in Daya Bay, Huizhou. The plant produces 330,000 tons of sulfuric acid per year; it is currently the largest WSA (wet process for sulfuric acid production) facility in operation worldwide. Its core reaction area utilizes the NWS series vanadium catalysts, which were developed independently by Nanjing Research Institute of Chemical Technology. During the commissioning process, the technical team from Nanhua Institute provided comprehensive technical support, effectively resolving issues such as the interlock reactions caused by a sudden increase in nitrogen oxides in the feed gas, as well as abnormal temperature rises in the catalyst bed during startup. This ensured the stable operation of the catalyst and the smooth commissioning of the facility. Since the development of the V1 vanadium catalyst in 1951, over the past 70 years, the South China Research Institute has continued to push forward innovation in technology. The catalyst developed for the NWS wet acid production process features a simple operation procedure, high sulfur recovery rates, high energy efficiency, and no wastewater generation. It has been adopted by more than 30 manufacturers both domestically and internationally, and it is listed in Sinopec’s catalog of core competitive products. Next, Nanhua Research Institute will carry out the replacement of catalysts in entire reactors, thereby promoting the use of domestically produced catalysts in more large-scale projects.

It is hoped that Nanhua will resume the production and development of vanadium sulfate catalysts, thereby putting those domestic brands that claim to be world-class suppliers of sulfuric acid catalysts in a weaker position.
