The relationship between communication protocols and hard wiring

I’m not very familiar with mechanics, so I’d like to ask the more experienced folks… Can the relationship between communication protocols and wired connections be understood as follows: wired connections require many wires for point-to-point connections, whereas communication protocols only need one bus line?
Wired connections are like the messenger riders sent by Qin Shi Huang; they must carry imperial edicts to a certain place in order to deliver orders. A communication protocol is like a radio station that sends out a series of codes, which are then decoded upon reception to yield commands.
