Depending on the season in which floods occur and their causes, they are generally classified into 4 types of flood seasons: (1) The flooding period caused mainly by summer storms is called the peak flood season； (2) The flooding period caused mainly by autumn storms (or prolonged heavy rain) is called the autumn flood season ； (3) The period in winter and spring when rivers are blocked by ice floes and experience rising water levels due to thawing is known as the ice flood season ； (4) The flood season caused mainly by the melting of icebergs in the river sources in the north or frozen ice sheets upstream during spring, as well as the flood season that occurs when the rainy season starts in the south at the turn of spring and summer, is referred to as the spring flood season.

For example, the flood season in the Yellow River basin is from June 1 to October 31 each year, while the flood season in the Huai River basin is from May 1 to September 30 each year. The flood season in the administrative area of Qingdao is from June 1 to September 30 every year.
