Those who use P6 to create project plans have probably noticed an \"interesting pattern\": in a newly created project, the task code for the first task is usually A1000, and the codes for subsequent tasks increase by 10 units each time, such as A1010, A1020, A1030... This is not a \"coincidence\"; it is due to the default automatic coding mechanism in P6 at work behind the scenes. What is the “automatic encoding default value”? In P6, each task must have a unique task code (Activity ID) to facilitate identification, sorting, and management. To avoid having to manually enter code each time a new task is added, P6 provides auto-generation rules, namely the so-called default values for automatic coding. It contains four settings: Job code prefix: The prefix used when creating a new job (default is A) ; Job code suffix: The suffix used when creating a new job (starts at 1000 by default) ; Increment: By how many numbers does the code increase when a new job is added (the default is 10) ; Increment based on the selected job: When a new job is added, the increment is determined by referring to the code of the currently selected job. For example: if the increment is 10 and job AB150 is selected, the new job will be AB160 ; If AB155 is selected, the new job will become AB165. Therefore, the first assignment code that people see most often is A1000. If you want to customize it, you don’t have to start with A1000. In some projects, the client or the company itself requires that work codes follow specific rules, such as being organized by specialty, by construction area, or in line with a WBS. At this point, we can adjust the default values of automatic coding to change the prefix, starting value, and increment rules to the desired format. It should be noted that modifying the default values will only affect jobs created later; existing jobs need to be modified manually (although batch operations are also possible). In most projects, once the project schedule is roughly finalized, all job codes are uniformly adjusted in bulk using the “Re-number Job Codes” tool, in accordance with the required coding rules. (We will discuss in more detail the tips for \"renumbering task codes\" in the next issue.) In summary, task codes are not just a series of numbers; they play a crucial role in determining whether we can locate tasks quickly, whether the plans are well-structured and organized, and whether they comply with the coding standards set by the project or contract. They determine our ability to locate tasks swiftly and manage them efficiently within the project plan. Master and make good use of automatic coding rules to ensure that plans meet standards while being more efficient and user-friendly.
