To start up the plant only after the butadiene price has risen – is that such a stupid business plan? As far as I know, the problem with butadiene is as follows: In the past, ethylene plants produced butadiene as a by-product of cracking naphtha to obtain ethylene. But now, an increasing number of plants in the United States are switching from using ethane derived from shale gas to produce ethylene, which means that butadiene is no longer produced as a by-product. As a result, there will be a long-term structural shortage of butadiene. But such a sharp rise must also involve speculation.
