Hydrogenation catalysts cannot be exposed to water, but it’s also not possible to have absolutely no water present. After conducting pressure tests on the reaction heat exchanger, all the water was drained, and nitrogen was used to purge the area; the drain valves were closed for a while before being reopened. Yet the nitrogen still contained moisture, as the gas emitted was white in color. I would like to know if there will be any problems if this gas enters the reactor and comes into contact with the catalyst under such conditions
I’m not sure what type of hydrogenation unit you have; in my opinion, the main concern with catalysts when exposed to water is that it may cause them to become muddy or break apart. If possible, use a recycle gas compressor to dry the system, and employ a portable dew point meter to check the moisture content in the recycle gas, so as to ensure that the system meets the requirements regarding the amount of water that can come into contact with the catalysts. Try to avoid any water from reaching the catalysts
Can’t the catalyst be dried again by using heated nitrogen?
Normally, before loading the catalyst, the system must be dried. After introducing nitrogen using a pressure booster to establish a nitrogen circulation, the furnace is turned on to raise the temperature, thereby drying the hydrogen-based reaction system!
