The production of polystyrene mainly involves three processes: the suspension method, the solution method, and the emulsion method. 1. Suspension method: It is the most commonly used method in industry at present. - First, styrene monomer, initiator, and a small amount of stabilizer are mixed together, then added to the reaction vessel, with water being poured in as the suspension medium. - Under stirring, it is heated to a certain temperature (80–130 degrees Celsius) to carry out the polymerization reaction for a specified period of time. - After the reaction is complete, it is cooled, and the polystyrene particles are separated; subsequent steps such as drying and screening yield the final product. 2. Solution method: - Dissolve the styrene monomer and initiator in an organic solvent. - Polymerization is carried out under controlled temperature and pressure conditions. - After polymerization is complete, the solvent is removed by methods such as stripping or precipitation, followed by drying and grinding. 3. Emulsion method: – Styrene monomer, water, and an emulsifier are mixed and then added to the reaction vessel, along with an initiator. - Emulsion polymerization is carried out under high-shear stirring. - After the reaction is complete, the final product is obtained through processes such as defoaming, coagulation, separation, and drying. Each method has its own specific advantages and application scenarios; the choice depends on the performance requirements of the desired product as well as cost considerations. .
