This texture is present on the end face of the stationary ring of the mechanical seal in the high-speed pump; the material of the rotating ring is tungsten carbide, while that of the stationary ring is silicon carbide. Rotational speed: 20,000; sealing medium: lubricating oil. Some people say this is a dynamic pressure groove, but after checking it, I feel the shape of the texture is different; moreover, this is on the stationary ring. Aren’t dynamic pressure grooves usually machined on the rotating ring? When touched, there is no sensation from the internal flaky texture; it must be very shallow ; The five external ring textures are darker and give a recessed appearance. I would like to ask the experts here: is this type of texture a dynamic pressure groove? What is its purpose? Thank you!

I guess so. Dry gas seals are available; they enable nitrogen to enter the sealing surface more effectively

This post was last edited by blade_wzy on 2017-4-30 at 19:32. As a supplementary note, the installation location of this seal experiences rotational speeds of over 20,000 revolutions per minute. I’m not sure if there will be any impact, as the PV value at such high speeds must be extremely high, and heat generation is also certain; without taking such measures, the results are likely to be poor. But the problem now is that it’s difficult to find a theoretical basis; it’s not clear whether there are any commonalities with dry gas sealing.
In my opinion, the mechanical seal also needs a lubricant; this petal-like texture is likely formed when the lubricant enters the groove before startup, creating an oil film as the pump operates!
It seems I’ll need to take a photo of the actual item tomorrow so that everyone can see it clearly.

Does no one know? ! I asked the staff from the sealing manufacturer, and they couldn’t explain it either – wow! Haven’t we mastered ordinary mechanical seal technology already? We’ve run out of tricks. :Q
