Its key performance indicators are at an internationally advanced level, and this technology successfully solves the problem of compressors in long-distance pipeline systems shutting down immediately when power is lost, thus providing additional assurance for the stable supply of natural gas. A natural gas compressor is the “pressure-boosting engine” of natural gas pipelines. Its core task is to pressurize natural gas, ensuring its continuous and stable flow through long-distance pipelines; its continuous operation directly determines the efficiency of gas transmission in the pipeline network. Previously, the traditional technologies used in this industry could only allow compressors to operate without stopping for up to 5 seconds; in situations such as power grid fluctuations or lightning strikes, this meant that the compressor units would shut down easily, resulting in huge economic losses and affecting the stability of industrial production as well as gas supply for household use. During this critical period of ensuring a stable supply of natural gas, the power-loss continuation technology developed by Huazhong Company utilizes the remaining kinetic energy of the motor to take over promptly in the event of a power outage, providing continuous and stable electrical power to enable a smooth transition for the compressors until the power supply is restored. Tests have shown that the upgraded unit can maintain operation without shutdown even during 18 seconds of power outage; furthermore, a test plan for operating under 40 seconds of power loss has been developed, which far exceeds the standard levels in the industry. In applications at key stations such as the Qianjiang Compressor Station and the Lichuan Compressor Station, this technology has demonstrated exceptional compatibility and reliability; it is able to handle grid fluctuations smoothly even under the most adverse conditions. During this winter’s heating season, the Lichuan Compressor Station, Yichang Compressor Station, Qianjiang Compressor Station, and Wuhan Compressor Station successfully managed 19 instances of grid fluctuations thanks to this technology, ensuring a stable supply of gas for 2 million residents downstream. It is reported that this technology has been widely applied in the Hubei section of the Sichuan-Guangdong Gas Pipeline, covering 20 electric-driven compressor units. During its application period, it prevented 579 unplanned shutdowns, resulting in savings of 9.3587 million yuan in terms of natural gas wastage. It is estimated that the adoption and dissemination of this technology will bring significant economic and social benefits. Once it is widely implemented, it is expected to prevent 106 shutdowns per year, resulting in annual savings of around 5.49 million yuan in natural gas wastage and overall transmission losses. Additionally, it will generate over 43 million yuan in new indirect pipeline transportation revenues, for a total comprehensive economic benefit of more than 53 million yuan; the payback period for the investment is merely half a year. At the same time, 1.0778 million cubic meters of natural gas are avoided from being vented each year, which is equivalent to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of around 2,371 tons. Next, Huazhong Company will accelerate the rollout of this technology; it plans to cover 10 compressor stations within the group by 2026, and achieve coverage of more than 20 compressor stations by 2027, while also introducing it to affiliated companies. At the same time, the technical framework will be continuously improved, commercial control software will be developed, and its application will be expanded to compression site applications in industries such as refining, metallurgy, and air separation.
