Many devices that require the addition of lubricating oil or hydraulic fluid often lack oil level indicators; can this be considered a design flaw?
I don’t think so; devices that don’t have a oil level gauge are generally less likely to leak oil, or it’s difficult to check the oil level and refuel them. Small gearbox ； Small pumps, etc. The oil level is generally below the oil seal, making leakage less likely. A regular oil change schedule is usually adopted; these devices are equipped with oil level holes at different heights depending on the speed of the equipment, and oil simply needs to be added to those holes.
Some may not have an oil sight glass, but they do have pre-drilled holes (plug holes), probably so that it is possible to install one manually considering orientation issues.
