I’ve been looking at the drawings for reaction vessels recently, and when I came to the section on mechanical seals, I noticed that the note column next to those seals read “oil-free”. I’m not sure what this means – does it mean that no lubricating oil is required for these mechanical seals?

Does that mean no need to add anything into the oil container? We’re all pushing hard now. It turns out I didn’t pay attention to the drawings; I always thought that mechanical seals required lubrication, so without checking the drawings I just added oil to them

You can search on Baidu; the structures of oil-free mechanical seals vary, as do the materials used for their sealing surfaces.

@I’ve read the article on qwl; I’m not sure now whether it’s possible to avoid using lubricant. I used to apply lubricant all the time, and I wonder what effect not using it will have on the mechanical seal
Firstly, the pressure in your reactor is not high. Secondly, the mechanical seal surface is very important; if adding oil has no effect on the material inside the reactor, then it’s fine to add some oil and continue using it
