During operation, what is the state of the support ring – does it move? What is the reason for the grooves on the outer circle? Thank you
During operation, the support ring remains stationary.
There is one called a \"guide ring\". Its function is to maintain a uniform gap between the edge of the piston and the cylinder liner, reduce uneven stress on the piston rings, and ensure uniform wear (due to the break points of the sealing rings). The sealing ring is easy to replace, and the support ring (guide ring) is also easy to replace.
During operation, the support ring remains stationary, while the groove is responsible for loading and unloading forces.
To prevent the support ring from functioning as a seal like a piston ring, grooves are created to allow gas to pass through, thereby minimizing the pressure difference at both ends of the support ring (the support ring still serves to reduce pressure). This ensures that the support ring functions solely to support the weight of the piston and half of the piston rod.
After grooving, the pressure difference at both ends of the support ring is reduced, the operating conditions improve, and the lifespan of the support ring is extended
