Does anyone know clearly the difference between impulse and reaction turbines? Could you give me an introduction?
The difference between impulse and reaction turbines lies in the blades: in impulse turbines, steam expansion occurs within the stationary blades, with the moving blades merely changing the direction of the airflow; the blade shapes of these two types differ significantly. In reaction turbines, however, the moving blades and stationary blades have similar appearances, and steam expands both in the stationary and moving blades. As the steam expands, it exerts a force on the moving blades as well; therefore, reaction turbines generate greater thrust and require a balance disk. Today, there are no pure impulse turbines anymore; they all have some degree of reaction. For this reason, there are also significant structural differences between impulse and reaction turbines
