A Stäubli compressor LMC313 is used for circulating the reaction gas in the propylene polymerization process – this gas consists of 80% propylene along with fine polypropylene particles, at a pressure of 30 bar and a temperature of 70 degrees. The sealing system employed is Flowserve GSS: Tandem Mechanical Dry Gas; the model numbers for the upper and lower seals are both SE04AD22RZ1UC1A. Due to the presence of fine particles, a separate circulation stream is used to purge the mechanical seals, and a filter is required to remove these particles from this stream; therefore, the filter needs to be replaced and cleaned frequently. The question now is: what is the required purge flow rate for this mechanical seal? How can switching and purging be minimized?
