Hello, fellow sailors. I work as a equipment engineer in a small fine chemical company. My supervisors often carry out equipment modifications; for example, they add a bottom tube bundle heat exchanger to existing 500-cubic-meter storage tanks – holes are made at the bottom of the tank, the tube bundle is inserted into it, and there are also baffles, among other components. All the specifications for these modifications are determined by them. 2. Make another opening on the manhole cover of the mixer, and use the upper pipe for feeding material. In short, for the design and modification of our equipment these days, we just think things out on our own, without any mathematical theories or anything like that. Since I used to work at Sinopec on equipment maintenance, my approach to work was quite rigid; I’m not familiar with making arbitrary changes to the equipment’s structure, and it’s difficult for me to accept such changes. I’ve never worked as a equipment engineer before, and I’m the only one in our team who holds this position. I’d like to ask everyone: is it something that every equipment engineer must know how to do? The manager said that if I’m to carry out this modification, I have to follow his ideas and struggle to come up with a solution. Is it our company that is doing something wrong, or are all small chemical enterprises like this? I’m very troubled right now and ask fellow sailors for guidance
To add, our leaders are of advanced age and should have considerable experience. I have been in this field for eight years: four years working on the maintenance of chemical process equipment, and three years in after-sales service for mechanical seals.

Equipment modification must comply with the requirements of standards and specifications; when necessary, process calculations as well as calculations regarding strength and stiffness are required...
