Participating in a process package, different sections have varying understandings of the definitions of reactors and vessels. They are mainly things like mixing kettles for ingredients, crystallization kettles, and sedimentation kettles – but are they considered reactors or containers? Some departments assign the tag number for these reactors as R, while other departments use D (Drum) as their tag number. How exactly should these devices be classified?
It mainly depends on whether a chemical reaction occurs. It is the reactor where chemical reactions take place; the others are classified as containers. However, different companies and industries vary.
Judging from names such as mixing tanks, crystallization tanks, and sedimentation tanks, reactors generally have special internal components that provide the conditions for reactions to take place. Containers generally serve only for storage and separation.
I agree with the opinion from the second floor: chemical reactions occur within the reactor. Due to these reactions, there is a possibility of changes in temperature and pressure, and reaction intermediates may also be formed. Therefore, higher requirements are placed on the material selection, manufacturing, and testing of reactors. Stirring tanks, crystallization tanks, and sedimentation tanks are mostly involved in physical changes.
