For containers subjected to both internal and external pressures, should the internal and external pressures be designed and checked separately? For example, a jacketed reactor. Is there any connection between internal pressure and external pressure? For example, if the internal pressure is 10 MPa while the external pressure is only 0.6 MPa – the external pressure being much lower than the internal pressure – then it can handle the internal pressure; there’s certainly no issue with the external pressure, so is it not necessary to calculate or check it?
External pressure must certainly be verified; complete design documents are required to prove to the owner, the manufacturer, and the testing agency that the external pressure is within acceptable limits
The failure modes of devices under internal pressure and external pressure are different; it cannot be assumed that if they can withstand internal pressure, there will be no problems with external pressure as well”
Each condition must be checked separately; the documents must be complete, and you cannot assume that since the internal pressure is fine, the external pressure must also be fine based on the supervisor’s judgment. This one should be safe, but the external pressure verification step still needs to be carried out
