The company has installed a new ethanol storage tank with a capacity of 500 m3; it is made of 304 stainless steel, operates under slight positive pressure, and at room temperature. The design drawings specify a mirror-polishing treatment and outline the requirements for polishing. I would like to ask fellow sailors: is it necessary to polish the inner wall of ethanol storage tanks?
This can be done; it should be tailored to the different requirements of the customers. We have manufactured a 316L methanol storage tank, and the customer requested that the inner surface be polished. This is something that ordinary manufacturing plants can accomplish; for tanks with a small volume, electrolytic polishing is used, while for those with a larger volume, mechanical polishing is employed.

If it is food-grade ethanol, it must be polished; you’ll know once you use it
Hygienic, edible ethanol can be used for polishing during the manufacturing of containers; 304 material is sufficient for this purpose. As for industrial-grade ethanol, it isn’t necessary to use it due to cost considerations
