Dear friends, our company's existing carbon steel storage tanks are used to store 98% sulfuric acid. Due to changes in the production process, 93% sulfuric acid will be used in the future. Can the carbon steel storage tanks continue to be stored?
The corrosion of materials by sulfuric acid at different concentrations and temperatures is quite different. For concentrated sulfuric acid with a concentration above 80% and a temperature below 80°C, carbon steel has better corrosion resistance.
Correct answer, theoretically more than 65% of the tanks can be made of carbon steel, and it is recommended that more than 80% of the tanks be made of carbon steel.
Corrosion is related to temperature and concentration. Since it is a storage tank, the temperature should be normal temperature, right? So for 93% concentration it should be fine. Attached is a graph for you

Is there any relevant standard that clearly states what concentration of sulfuric acid can be stored in carbon steel storage tanks?
According to personal design experience, it is no problem to change the storage of 93% sulfuric acid.
