The flange was positioned at the mid-span many years ago; I thought I understood it then. Today, I came across this statement: “The bolt holes in the flange of the head should be arranged at the midpoint of the alignment line that passes through the center of the head and the center of the nozzle,” and it was a bit confusing to me. Is it the same as what’s correct below? Please help to clarify this. Also, for the horizontal connections on horizontal tanks, is it still necessary to place the flanges at the mid-span? What standards specify this?

The image you’re referring to shows a horizontal container; in my opinion, the so-called requirement regarding the midpoint actually refers more accurately to the midpoint measured with respect to the vertical line through the ground for the horizontally extending pipe flanges.
The image doesn’t refer to a horizontal container, right? Can’t it be used on the head of a vertical vessel? I’m referring to the pictures in the book *Problems and Methods*, not the drawings created by some poster themselves.
