Could everyone please help take a look at how the saddle for this liquid carbon dioxide storage tank is installed? Why is the backing plate outside the insulation layer? I checked the comprehensive book on chemical equipment design, and it states that the insulation layer of the supports should extend at least four times the thickness of the insulation used on the container itself; this clearly isn’t enough...
The shimming is placed outside the insulation layer to prevent heat from being transmitted into the cylinder through the saddle. Because this is a low-temperature container
I saw a backing plate for the first time placed outside the insulation; so, how is the container fixed? Isn’t the axial stress verification for horizontal containers a trivial matter then?
It’s a simple solution – a heat-insulating, evenly distributed support ring (such as one made of fiberglass) is placed inside the insulation layer at the same location as the support. This is often the only way to prevent temperature transfer in low-temperature containers.
