I have a question regarding the determination of the pressure used for testing heat exchangers: Generally, the testing pressure for heat exchangers is set at 1.25 times the maximum operating pressure. But some people say that temperature compensation should be added, but how is the temperature compensation coefficient determined? Where can I find it? I recently saw a reboiler with an operating pressure of 3.5 Mpa, and the design-defined pressure for testing is 7.0 Mpa. I’m not sure how this value is calculated; please advise, experts!
Is the temperature compensation you mentioned this one? 3.2.12.2 Temperature for voltage withstand test: During the voltage withstand test, the test temperature (the temperature of the metal in the pressure vessel wall) should be at least 30°C higher than the temperature at which the metal in the pressure vessel wall loses its ductility, or it shall comply with the provisions of the product standards. If factors such as plate thickness cause an increase in the temperature at which the material loses its ductility, then the test temperature must be increased accordingly.
The pressure test sequence for heat exchangers is generally to start with the shell side and then the tube side. There are also cases where the tube side is handled first and then the shell side, or where pressure testing is carried out simultaneously; the specific method should be chosen in accordance with GB/T151 based on the actual circumstances.

When working on pressure vessels, it is first necessary to be familiar with the standards and regulations; GB/T150 outlines clear requirements in this regard. These are essential steps – one must not start designing without knowing these things, as it is too dangerous!
