When using an ultrasonic thickness gauge to measure the thickness of pipes, why do some readings show a thickness greater than the pipe’s original wall thickness?
It depends on how thick it needs to be; a few millimeters is normal. Take multiple measurements. Also, check whether there are any deposits on the wall surface and whether the paint on the outside has been completely removed. The thickness measurement data is merely for reference only; inaccuracies can be influenced by various factors.

Personally, I think there are several reasons: first, the wall thickness of the pipes is uneven. Second, the wall thickness of the pipe itself is greater than the nominal thickness. Third, whether the pipe is carbon steel determines its likelihood of rusting.
When thickening pipes, the effect of the medium must be taken into account – could hydrogen bulging occur? Abnormal thickening indicates that it’s time to replace the pipe!
Was it measured at the straight pipe section or at the elbow?
For safety reasons, the actual thickness of pipes and pipe fittings in domestic use is generally slightly greater than the designed thickness.
I wonder what the original thickness referred to by the poster is? Nominal thickness? Steel pipes inherently have thickness variations; the standards allow for different allowable values for such variations, which can be positive or negative
