Those who have worked at their posts for a long time know that this is quite easy to do, as they become very familiar with the sounds produced by equipment operating normally. Any deviation from these normal sounds surely indicates a problem with its operation. Also, check the lubricating oil level, and monitor the temperatures at several key control points of the bearings (it’s advisable to frequently contact the central control room for confirmation).
