Hello, Sea Friends! My project involves chlorine gas pipelines, and rupture discs have been installed at the outlets of the safety valves. What is the purpose of using rupture discs? I would appreciate it if an expert could provide an explanation. Thank you! Look at the picture
I’ve never worked on this type of process, but since you mentioned it’s a chlorine pipeline, I guess it’s intended to prevent minor leaks when the safety valve is not in operation, after all, chlorine is toxic.
1. To prevent chlorine leaks, safety valves cannot ensure complete sealing; however, rupture disks are generally installed at the inlet of the safety valve, and the chlorine release pipe is usually led to an alkali tank; 2. Prevent water vapor in the pipeline from entering the safety valve spool ; 3. Prevent pressure in the relief pipe. However, the installation of the burst disc at the outlet of the safety valve must meet standard requirements.
I haven’t seen the rupture disc in the legend yet.
Blowout disks installed at the outlet of chlorine safety valves are generally made of plastic; the main purpose is to isolate the pipeline at the safety valve outlet from the discharge manifold, thereby preventing reverse corrosion and damage on the side of the safety valve outlet caused by a mixture of chlorine and moist air that may be present in the discharge manifold.

Okay, received! I checked the rupture disc specification HG/T 20570.3-1995; it states that when the process medium is extremely valuable or highly toxic, any leakage is not allowed during operation, and rupture discs should be used in series with safety valves. This clause appears to apply to the chlorine pipeline in our project.
