Recently, two intelligent welding robots designed by CNPC (Xinjiang) Engineering Oil Construction Branch, under the leadership of CNPC Engineering Corporation, successfully completed operational testing at the construction site of the crude oil storage tank area in Jinzhou Port, Liaoning. It is reported that this intelligent welding robot can adopt various welding positions such as horizontal, vertical, and upward, enabling welding in over a dozen different scenarios including those involving steel plates, trusses, and ring wall panels. In this project, the welding qualification rate reached 100%, and compared to manual welding, the overall efficiency of intelligent welding robots can also be increased by 3 to 4 times. At the end of 2022, the Engineering Oil Construction Branch of CNPC (Xinjiang) established a dedicated task force to work on intelligent welding robots for storage tank float tanks. This team carried out in-depth analyses of technical requirements and a detailed breakdown of the various operation scenarios. Through numerous welding process tests, thorough data analysis, and simulations of actual working conditions, they successfully developed intelligent welding robot technology for storage tank float tanks that possesses independent intellectual property rights and significant practical value for engineering applications. This intelligent welding robot for storage tank buoy tanks not only effectively addresses the problems of low welding efficiency and high labor costs in the manufacturing of large storage tanks, but also significantly reduces the safety risks associated with manual operations. Zhang Chengjie, a first-level engineer at CNPC (Xinjiang) Engineering Oil Construction Branch, explained that the biggest advantage of intelligent welding robots is their suitability for use in confined spaces such as storage tank floating compartments and ships; in the future, they can play an important role in the construction of storage tanks with a capacity of 50,000 cubic meters or more. In the confined space inside the floating tank, the intelligent welding robot can automatically locate the weld seams using pre-set parameters; the welding of a single partition in a floating tank can be completed in just 30 minutes, making the entire process fast and precise. “The welds produced by robotic welding are full and uniform, with stable and reliable quality. In our storage tank float structure, there are 68 floats and over 550 trusses, and some of the construction areas are extremely narrow, making operations very difficult. The use of intelligent welding robots provides a solid guarantee for safe construction, while also significantly improving construction efficiency. ”Shou Xinlong, manager of the Engineering Control Department at the North China Branch and project manager for the crude oil storage tank project at Jinzhou Port, said. Welding of storage tank buoy tanks is considered a task carried out in a confined space; with a height of less than 1 meter, welders have to work while lying down, which poses significant safety risks. It is also difficult to ensure the efficiency and quality of welding in such conditions. The emergence of intelligent welding robots for storage tank floaters has filled the gap in terms of intelligence in the welding of such floaters in China. It can effectively address issues such as low installation efficiency and high labor costs associated with large storage tanks, while also significantly reducing safety risks. At the end of 2022, CPECC CNPC (Xinjiang) Engineering Company established a dedicated task force to develop intelligent welding robots for tank floating compartments. Through numerous welding process tests, in-depth analysis of data, and verification using simulated working conditions, it was successful in creating such intelligent welding robots. In this engineering verification, the welding qualification rate reached 100%, and compared to manual welding, the overall efficiency of intelligent welding robots can be increased by 3 to 4 times. The intelligent welding robot for storage tank buoy tanks has been designated as a key research project by CPECC. Next, the R&D team will focus on overcoming the challenges associated with intelligent welding in fully enclosed spaces, with the goal of enabling robots to completely replace manual welding.
