On the 28th, reporters learned from the Institute of Metallurgy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that researchers there have successfully developed the metal matrix strip made of Hastelloy (C276), which is the key material for second-generation high-temperature superconducting strips. This achievement has ended the long-term reliance on imported materials of this kind, marking an important step forward for China in the field of key materials for clean energy. Controlled nuclear fusion devices are known as “artificial suns” and represent an important approach for humanity to explore future clean energy sources. Second-generation high-temperature superconducting tapes are essential core materials for building controlled nuclear fusion devices. Without it, it is not possible to generate a strong enough magnetic field to \"contain\" plasma at temperatures of hundreds of millions of degrees Celsius. In this study, the research team successfully achieved industrial-scale production of C276 alloy with high purity in ton quantities, using a purification technique they developed independently. At the same time, the team overcame the technical challenges associated with processing ultra-thin and ultra-long base materials, rolling the alloy into strip materials with a thickness of only 0.046 millimeters, a width of 12 millimeters, and a length of over 2000 meters; the surface of these strips was as smooth as glass, with a roughness of less than 20 nanometers. This material exhibits extremely high strength at liquid nitrogen temperatures; an area the size of a fingernail can withstand a weight of around 19 tons, and it retains its excellent properties even after being treated at high temperatures. At present, the self-produced C276 has been tested in various enterprises, and high-temperature superconducting tapes with performance at international standards have been successfully manufactured for use in relevant domestic scientific and technological projects.
