I currently have a refrigerant heat exchanger. The design parameters are as follows: the design temperature for the shell side is -50/50°C, while that for the tube side is -40°C. The medium flowing in the shell side is a 30% calcium chloride solution; therefore, the material used for the shell side should be carbon steel. I am planning to use 09MnNiDR as the material for the shell and tube sheet, and 316 stainless steel for the heat exchange tubes. I’m concerned that these tubes might corrode. What other materials could be used for the heat exchange tubes? I hope experts can provide some suggestions
In cases of high chloride levels, 316L is the preferred choice
SAF 2507 offers better resistance to chloride ions than 304, 316L, and 2205. The resistance to chloride-induced corrosion – particularly pitting and crevice corrosion – can be calculated using the following formula: PRE (pitting resistance equivalent): PRE = %Cr + 3.3%Mo + 16%Ni (in weight%). SAF2205: PRE 35; AISI316L: PRE 24; SAF2507: PRE 41
