Baijian Testing will now provide a detailed explanation regarding the testing of alternators, in the hope of helping you. (1) Rotor inspection: Inspection for rotor short circuits to ground. Using the 1×KΩ setting on the ohmmeter, the resistance between slip ring 3 of rotor 1 and the shaft end of rotor 1 should be ∞; otherwise, it indicates a short circuit in the rotor coil, which requires replacement. Check for open circuits and short circuits in the rotor coil. Using the 1×Ω setting on ohmmeter 2, check the resistance value between the two slip rings 3 of rotor 1; it should be between 2.8–3.0Ω. If the resistance value is in the kΩ range, it indicates that rotor 1 is open-circuited; if the resistance value is lower than that, it indicates that rotor 1 is short-circuited. Inspection for rotor slip ring wear. Check the surface of slip ring 3 for any damage, and measure it using caliper 2; if the depth of the wear marks exceeds 0.22 mm, then rotor 1 or slip ring 3 should be replaced. (2) Stator inspection: Inspection for short circuits of the stator windings to ground. Taking the Jetta sedan as an example, use the 1×KΩ setting on a multimeter to check the resistance between core 1 of the stator coil and the terminal points 2, 3, and 4 of the stator coil; this resistance should be infinite. If a lower resistance value is detected, it indicates that the stator coil is short-circuited to ground, and the stator coil needs to be replaced. To check for open circuits in the stator coils, use the 1×Ω setting on the ohmmeter to test each pair of terminals of the stator coils: 1 and 2, 1 and 3, and 2 and 3. The value displayed should be 0. If the measured value is in the KΩ range, it indicates an open circuit, and the stator should be replaced. (3) Inspection of the diode board: Taking the Jetta as an example, use a multimeter 5 and press both the resistance and voltage measurement buttons 8 and 9 at the same time. Testing the forward diode: Terminal 6 (black) is connected to the positive heat sink 1 (equivalent to B+), which corresponds to the negative terminal of the forward diode; terminal 7 (red) is connected one by one to node 2, which corresponds to the positive terminal of the forward diode. Testing the negative diode: Terminal 7 (red) is connected to the negative heat sink 3 (the positive terminal of the negative diode), while terminal 6 (black) is connected one by one to node 2 (the negative terminal of the negative diode). Testing the excitation diode: Terminal 6 (black) is connected to the excitation terminal 4 (i.e., D+), which is the negative pole of the excitation diode; terminal 7 (red) is connected one by one to node 2, which is the positive pole of the excitation diode. All tests must be performed three times, and the values should all be between 50-80Ω; otherwise, replace the diode board. (4) Inspection of carbon brushes: Use a caliper 1 to check the length of carbon brush 2. The standard length is 13 mm, and the maximum allowable use length is 5 mm; it should be replaced if this limit is exceeded. (5) Voltage regulator inspection: With the battery charging properly and the generator’s drive belt properly tensioned, if the engine speed is above idle speed yet the charging indicator light does not go out, remove the regulator from the generator. Use a wire to connect terminal “F” of the regulator to terminal “1”, then install the regulator on the generator. At this point, the regulator is not functioning properly. Start the engine and increase its speed; if the charging indicator light goes out, it indicates that the generator is working correctly, and the problem lies with the regulator ; If the charging indicator light remains on, it indicates that the fault lies with the generator, not with the regulator. When the regulator fails, it should be replaced entirely. (6) Inspection of bearings: Check for any damage to the bearings; if damaged, they should be replaced. (7) Inspection of the generator drive belt: Check the condition of the V-belt; it must be replaced immediately if any of the following defects are found: cracks in the base layer (cracks, breakage in the core, cracks in the groove section) ; Position separation (cover layer, pull rope) ; Base cracking ; Pull-string scattering ; Side wear (scattering, side material damage, side hardening, side slippage, upper surface cracks). When the belt is placed on the pulley, there should be a gap between the inner diameter of the belt and the bottom of the pulley groove; if no gap exists, the belt must be replaced.
