As the production load of the caustic soda plant increased, the existing 4 horizontal condensers in the chiller system became outdated and suffered from severe blockages, which resulted in poor ammonia condensation. This led to safety hazards such as high exhaust pressure during normal operation of the chillers. To improve the efficiency of circulating water use and achieve a more balanced heat load, thereby meeting the demands of high-load production. During the major maintenance in 2020, the Alkali Union Plant organized the installation of brand-new evaporative condensers. To ensure the successful commissioning of the evaporative condenser, prior to the trial run, the caustic soda production plant arranged in advance for the cleaning and replacement of the circulation water pipelines of the evaporative condenser as well as the interior of the collection tanks. Additionally, the plant’s technical staff provided on-site training for the supervisors in the ammonium processing area and the personnel working in the ice compression unit, covering the layout of the pipelines, the structure of the equipment, and the operational procedures. At 9:00 a.m. on October 12, the manufacturer’s technical staff, namely equipment technician Gui Junhua and process technician Zhou Jin, provided on-site training on the operation of the testing process to the supervisors incharge of the ammonium processing stage as well as all operators working at the ice pressing station. The manufacturer’s technical staff answered in detail the various questions raised by the ice pressing operators regarding the operational process. After the training, the test drive officially began. The commissioning process is divided into three steps: (1) After verifying that the equipment is ready for operation, the fan and water pump are first tested for proper functioning; once these tests are successful. Top up the water tank of the evaporative condenser to prepare for no-load testing. (2) For the evaporative condenser, a no-ammonia air test is conducted, with a commissioning time of 1 hour. During the no-load test, since there was a lot of debris in the circulating water filter due to its first operation, the filter was cleaned taking advantage of this no-load test period. After 1 hour of testing, drain the wastewater from the water collection tray to remove impurities, and then refill it with water. (3) In accordance with the operating procedures, the trial run was officially started at 15:20. The test run was successful on the first attempt. During the initial testing phase, the evaporative condenser and horizontal condensers No. 1 and No. 2 work together to ensure production. It was officially put into use on the afternoon of the 13th, with the old condenser being taken out of service as a backup unit. The new condenser is energy-efficient and high-performing in heat exchange, and it is also easy to maintain. The installation of the evaporative condenser not only helps to reduce production costs but also lowers the expenses associated with equipment maintenance ; It can also effectively eliminate production-related issues such as low efficiency in the use of circulating water and high exhaust pressure in the chillers, thereby helping to improve the stability of operation in the caustic soda production plant and meeting the cooling requirements of its chiller system, which is capable of producing 600 tons of product per day.
