Henan Longyu Coal Chemical Process: Project for Producing 320,000 tons per year of liquid ammonia and for the comprehensive utilization of carbon emissions

Recently, the Shangqiu Ecology and Environment Bureau issued a public notice announcing that the environmental impact assessment report for Henan Longyu Coal Chemical Co., Ltd.’s project aimed at producing 320,000 tons per year of liquid ammonia from process exhaust gases, as well as for the comprehensive utilization of carbon, has been accepted for review. Due to the sluggish market for ethylene glycol, most domestic coal-based ethylene glycol production operations are operating at a loss, and some of these production facilities have ceased operations. Henan Longyu Coal Chemical plans to cease the hydrogenation process of its ethylene glycol production unit and sell dimethyl oxalate (DMO) directly to external parties. The raw hydrogen originally used in the hydrogenation process will be in excess. At the Longyu Coal Chemical Industry’s air separation unit, most of the nitrogen produced, aside from that used for internal purposes, is released into the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide gas produced as a by-product of the low-temperature methanol washing unit is partially used as raw material for the liquid carbon dioxide plant, while the remaining amount is released into the atmosphere. In order to make rational use of the excess process exhaust gases (80,000 m3/h of hydrogen and CO2) as well as the by-produced utility gases (nitrogen), Longyu Coal Chemical decided to invest 350 million yuan in building a project that converts these process exhaust gases into 320,000 tons per year of liquid ammonia, thereby enabling the production of liquid ammonia. A portion of the liquid ammonia used in the product is employed to absorb CO2, thereby producing 400,000 tons of ammonium bicarbonate ； The remaining portion is sold externally to serve as raw material for Henan Ruibai New Materials Co., Ltd. and other enterprises within the Yongcheng Chemical Industry Park. The project name is the Project for Producing 320,000 tons per year of liquid ammonia from process exhaust gases and the Comprehensive Utilization of Carbon. Product structure after renovation: Once the facility is completed, Longyu’s coal chemical products will be as follows. 500,000 tons per year of methanol (unchanged); 200,000 tons per year of dimethyl ether (unchanged); 400,000 tons per year of acetic acid (unchanged); 380,000 tons per year of dimethyl oxalate (new); 10,000 tons per year of acetonitrile (unchanged); 320,000 tons per year of liquid ammonia (new); 400,000 tons per year of ammonium bicarbonate (new); 0 tons per year of ethylene glycol (production reduced from 400,000 tons to none). In July 2025, the Shangqiu Ecology and Environment Bureau announced the acceptance of Henan Longyu Coal Chemical Co., Ltd.’s project for producing 320,000 tons per year of liquid ammonia as well as carrying out comprehensive utilization of related by-products.
