According to Sinochem News, on December 18, the China Sulfuric Acid Industry Association, in conjunction with the China Phosphorus Fertilizer Industry Association, held a special meeting to focus on ensuring a stable supply and prices in the sulfuric acid and phosphorus fertilizer industries. Various regulatory measures were established to guarantee a steady supply of fertilizers and stable prices ahead of the spring planting season, thereby strengthening the foundation for agricultural input supply that is essential for food security. Reporters have learned that since the beginning of this year, tight supplies of sulfur resources worldwide have led to a sharp rise in prices; the price of imported sulfur has increased by over 230% so far this year, with the unit price at one point exceeding 4,100 yuan per ton. According to data from Zhuochuang Information, as of December 11, the average price of sulfur in China reached a yearly high; the average transaction price for solid sulfur was 3,936.88 yuan per ton, representing a year-on-year increase of 169.59% ； The average transaction price for liquid sulfur was 3,992.75 yuan per ton, representing a year-on-year increase of 161.61%. The sharp rise in sulfur prices has directly led to a surge in the production costs of fertilizers in the domestic market, disrupting the stable operation of the fertilizer industry. This has created significant pressure on ensuring an adequate supply of fertilizers for winter storage and spring planting, making it urgent for the industry to maintain supply and stabilize prices. In light of the current situation, the meeting stipulated that, with regard to export controls, sulfuric acid exporting enterprises must give priority to meeting domestic market demand, actively reduce the volume of exports, and ensure that the prices of products intended for export are not lower than those sold domestically during the same period ； In terms of price control, using the price on December 11 as a benchmark, acid production enterprises should demonstrate a proactive attitude and must not raise prices without authorization, in order to ensure stable market operations ； In terms of pricing mechanisms, sulfur enterprises should focus on the domestic market and establish an independent and controllable pricing system to avoid significant price fluctuations driven by the international market, thereby ensuring the stable operation of the domestic market. The meeting emphasized that the sulfuric acid and phosphate fertilizer industries should raise their political awareness, fully recognize the importance of food security and ensuring a stable supply of fertilizers, take on greater responsibilities, and prioritize efforts to maintain a stable supply and prices. At the same time, the China Sulfuric Acid Industry Association and the China Phosphorus Fertilizer Industry Association must earnestly fulfill their responsibilities for industry self-regulation, strengthen supervision and monitoring of the industry, and make every effort to ensure a stable supply and price level. They should encourage sulfuric acid manufacturers and phosphorus fertilizer producers to establish stable upstream and downstream supply relationships by signing long-term purchase and sales agreements. Furthermore, in order to fundamentally alleviate the pressure on sulfur resource supply, the meeting also mentioned promoting the use of phosphogypsum in acid production through appropriate policies and supporting measures, and coordinating with relevant departments to develop supplementary support initiatives. Public data shows that China generates approximately 90 million tons of phosphogypsum each year, and 1 ton of phosphogypsum can produce 0.45 tons of sulfuric acid. If this technology can be deployed on a large scale, it will effectively supplement the domestic supply of sulfur resources. It is reported that, driven by leading enterprises such as Guizhou Phosphorus Chemical Group and Yunnan Yuntianhua Co., Ltd., the technology for producing sulfuric acid from phosphogypsum has gradually matured and been put into practical use, with some projects operating stably for many years.
